Your First Visit

What to expect when you visit Mason Family Chiropractic

What Happens at Your First Appointment?

We understand that visiting a chiropractor for the first time can feel daunting. That's why we've designed our first visit to be thorough, informative, and comfortable. Here's what you can expect when you come to see us at Mason Family Chiropractic.

1

Booking Your Appointment

You can book your appointment online through our booking system, or by calling us on 01473 954817. When booking, you'll be asked to provide some basic information about yourself and your main complaint.

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment as we may need to examine your spine and joints.

2

Consultation (Case History)

Your appointment begins with a detailed discussion about your health. We'll ask about:

  • Your current complaint €“ what's bothering you, when it started, what makes it better or worse
  • Your medical history €“ any previous injuries, surgeries, or health conditions
  • Your lifestyle €“ your work, exercise habits, sleep patterns
  • Your goals €“ what you want to achieve from treatment

This information helps us understand the full picture of your health and identify any factors that may be contributing to your problem.

3

Physical Examination

Following the consultation, we'll perform a thorough physical examination. This typically includes:

  • Observing your posture and how you move
  • Checking the range of motion in your spine and joints
  • Testing your muscle strength and reflexes
  • Palpating (feeling) your spine and muscles to identify areas of tension or restriction
  • Neurological tests if indicated
  • Orthopaedic tests specific to your complaint

The examination allows us to identify exactly what's causing your problem and rule out anything that might require referral to another healthcare provider.

4

Diagnosis and Explanation

Once we've completed the examination, we'll explain our findings in terms you can understand. We'll discuss:

  • What we believe is causing your problem
  • Why you're experiencing these symptoms
  • Whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition
  • What other investigations might be needed (e.g., X-rays, MRI)

We believe in honest, open communication. If we don't think we can help you, we'll tell you and recommend an alternative healthcare provider.

5

Treatment Plan

If chiropractic care is appropriate, we'll discuss a recommended treatment plan with you. This will include:

  • How many treatments we expect you'll need
  • How often you should come in
  • What improvement you can expect and when
  • Things you can do at home to help your recovery
  • The costs involved

We'll never pressure you into a course of treatment. The decision to proceed is always yours, and we're happy to answer any questions you have.

6

Treatment (If Appropriate)

Depending on your condition and how much time is available, we may begin treatment at your first visit. This could include:

  • Spinal adjustments
  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Acupuncture/dry needling
  • Advice on exercises and stretches

Some patients feel immediate relief, while others may feel a bit sore for a day or two as the body adjusts. We'll explain what to expect after treatment.

Common Questions

Answers to questions we often receive from new patients

Does chiropractic treatment hurt?

Most patients find chiropractic adjustments comfortable and even pleasant. You may hear a popping or cracking sound during an adjustment €“ this is simply gas being released from the joint and is completely normal. Some patients experience mild soreness for a day or two after their first treatment, similar to what you might feel after starting a new exercise routine.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Yes, chiropractic care is very safe when performed by a qualified, registered chiropractor. Dr Mykel Mason is registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and has extensive training and experience. We conduct a thorough examination before any treatment to ensure it's appropriate for you.

How long does the first appointment take?

Please allow approximately 45-60 minutes for your first appointment. This gives us time to conduct a thorough consultation and examination without rushing. Follow-up appointments are typically 15-20 minutes.

Do I need to undress for the examination?

We may need to examine your spine and the affected area, so we ask that you wear comfortable clothing. Depending on your complaint, we may ask you to remove outer layers so we can see your spine. We always maintain your modesty and comfort, and you're welcome to bring a friend or family member with you.

How soon will I feel better?

This varies depending on your condition, how long you've had it, and your overall health. Some patients feel significant improvement after just one or two treatments, while others with chronic conditions may take longer. We'll give you a realistic idea of what to expect during your first visit.

Can I bring someone with me?

Absolutely. You're welcome to bring a friend or family member with you to your appointment. They can wait in our reception area or, if you prefer, accompany you during the consultation and examination.
